Features
  • Merino wool blend. 54% Merino carries the warmth, the moisture management and the odor resistance; the nylon and elastane carry the durability and the shape. Full blend: 54% Merino wool, 43% recycled nylon, 3% elastane.
  • Zero cushion. No cushioning anywhere — a slim, breathable barrier between foot and boot, for skiers who want the boot's fit and nothing between them and it.
  • Indestructawool™ durability. Extra yarn is knit into the high-impact wear zones — heel, toe and the shin where a boot buckle sits — so the sock wears out where it is thickest rather than where it is thinnest.
  • 4 Degree™ Elite Fit System. Two elastics pull the sock in at the arch and the ankle, and mesh zones sit where the foot vents. It is what stops a sock creeping down inside a boot and blistering you.
  • Odor resistance. Merino resists odor build-up, so a pair aired out overnight is wearable again the next day — the practical reason to ski in wool.
Size & Fit

Smartwool sock sizes run off shoe size — check the Smartwool sock chart on this page. Offered in S, M, L, XL. Over-the-calf height finishes above a ski or snowboard boot cuff rather than under it. Smartwool lists this style as a standard fit.

Smartwool Size Chart - Socks

Smartwool Sizing Chart

Sock sizes are based on your everyday U.S. shoe size.

Socks (Men's & Women's):

Size U.S. Men's Shoe Size U.S. Women's Shoe Size Euro Shoe Size UK Shoe Size
S 3 - 5.5 4 - 6.5 34 - 37 2 - 4.5
M 6 - 8.5 7 - 9.5 38 - 41 5 - 7.5
L 9 - 11.5 10 - 12.5 42 - 45 8 - 10.5
XL 12 - 14.5 N/A 46 - 49 11 - 13.5
XXL 15 - 17.5 N/A 50 - 53 14 - 16.5

Kids' Socks:

Size U.S. Shoe Size Euro Shoe Size UK Shoe Size
XS 6 - 8.5 22 - 25 5 - 7.5
S 9 - 11.5 26 - 28 8 - 10.5
M 12 - 2.5 29 - 32 11 - 13.5
L 3 - 6 33 - 36 1 - 4.5

Kids' sock sizes follow kids' shoe sizing, which starts over after size 13.5 - so size M covers 12 through 2.5, and size L covers 3 through 6.

Smartwool socks run true to size, based on your total foot length - and calf circumference for compression socks. Smartwool socks are designed to retain their fit and shape; following the care instructions on the label will help avoid shrinking or stretching.

Best for

Is this right for you?

Resort ski and snowboard days

Over-the-calf height finishes above the boot cuff, so no sock edge is trapped between a hard shell and the shin.

Not for: There is no padding here at all. If your boot rubs anywhere, cushioning will help more than a thinner sock. Try the Women's Full Cushion Twilight Vista socks

Touring and long days out

A thin Merino sock breathes best on the climb, which is where a touring day actually generates heat.

Not for: On a cold, static day — a lift-served day in January — a zero-cushion sock will feel thin. Add the Thermal Merino Reversible Neck Gaiter

Winter boots and cold days

Over-the-calf Merino works just as well inside a winter boot as a ski boot, and it goes several days between washes.

Not for: Over-the-calf height is deliberate and tall — it is not a sock for shoes. Add the Unisex Merino Gloves

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
How do I pick a sock size?

Smartwool sock sizes run off shoe size, not foot length in inches. The Smartwool sock chart on this page maps each size to US, Euro and UK shoe sizes. This style is offered in S, M, L, XL.

What does zero cushion mean?

Smartwool's own definition for this style: “Non-cushioned and slim fit for less bulk and enhanced comfort, providing a breathable barrier between your foot and boot.” No cushioning anywhere — a slim, breathable barrier between foot and boot, for skiers who want the boot's fit and nothing between them and it.

Can I wear these more than once between washes?

Yes — that is one of the practical reasons to ski in wool. Merino resists odor build-up, so a pair aired out overnight is fine for a second and often a third day. Wash them when they are actually dirty.

Will they shrink?

Not if you follow the label. Machine wash on a gentle cycle in warm or cool water and tumble dry low. High heat is what shrinks and felts a wool sock — a hot dryer will do more damage than a season of skiing.

What is Indestructawool™?

Extra yarn knit into the heel, toe and shin — the zones a ski boot wears through first. It is construction rather than a coating, so it does not wash out.
