Double CloudTec Phase
Helion foam tuned for softness
Lightweight breathable mesh upper
Description

Two layers of CloudTec Phase, stacked. The pods collapse in sequence from heel to toe and they do it twice over, so the Cloudsurfer Max rolls through the footstrike with far more foam underneath than the standard Cloudsurfer.

Helion foam tuned for softness fills it out, a light mesh upper keeps the weight down, and next-generation eyestays spread lace pressure across the instep. Neutral, and built for distance rather than pace.

Features
  • Double CloudTec Phase. Two layers of the Phase pod geometry rather than one. The pods still collapse in sequence from heel to toe, but there is twice the structure doing it - deeper, and still rolling rather than landing.
  • Helion foam tuned for softness. On's Helion foam, tuned here toward softness rather than return. It fills out the space between the pod layers and is what makes the step-in feel plush.
  • Lightweight breathable mesh upper. Deliberately plain and light. On a shoe carrying this much midsole, the upper is where the weight has to come out.
  • Next-generation eyestays. The eyelet panels are reworked to spread lace pressure across the instep rather than concentrating it on two or three points - the usual sore spot on a cushioned trainer worn for hours.
  • Rubber outsole. Rubber laid on for reliable traction. Unglamorous, and the thing that decides whether a high-mileage shoe reaches high mileage.

On rate stability Medium-High despite classifying the shoe Neutral. A sequenced pod collapse is inherently steadier than a stack that compresses all at once.

On rate it Low-Medium. There is no plate here; the forward motion comes from the pod geometry rather than from snap.

Best for

Is this right for you?

Long runs and daily mileage

What the second Phase layer is for. Protection for the miles where the distance is the point, with a rolling transition that keeps it from feeling like hard work.

Not for: Not a tempo shoe. On rate responsiveness Low-Medium; there is no plate and no snap. Shop road running shoes

Standing and all-day wear

Deep cushioning and a smooth roll suit hospital shifts and long days as much as they suit running, and plenty of people buy it for exactly that.

Not for: It looks like a running shoe - judge that against your own dress code. Shop women's shoes

Trails and rough ground

Fine on canal paths and firm gravel where the cushioning still earns its keep.

Not for: Skip anything technical. A tall double stack on uneven ground is an ankle risk, and there are no lugs. Shop all footwear

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
How is the Cloudsurfer Max different from the Cloudsurfer 2?

One layer of CloudTec Phase against two. The Cloudsurfer 2 weighs 225 g, has a 9 mm drop and On rate its cushioning Medium. The Max weighs 262 g, drops to 6 mm and is rated High. Both are neutral, both use the same sequenced pod geometry, and both roll through the footstrike rather than landing on it. Choose the 2 if you want light and lively for daily miles; choose the Max if you want protection for longer or slower runs, or if you simply prefer more shoe underfoot.

What is CloudTec Phase?

It is On's newer pod geometry, computer-optimised so the pods collapse in sequence from heel to toe as your foot rolls through, rather than compressing together. You feel it as one continuous motion instead of a distinct landing and push-off. Doubled up as it is here, it gives depth without the disconnected feeling a tall stack can have - which is also why On rate the stability Medium-High on a shoe they class as neutral.

How does it compare to the Cloudstratus 3?

Both are double-stacked cushioned neutral shoes with a 6 mm drop, so the choice is about feel. The Cloudstratus uses two layers of the original CloudTec with a Speedboard between them, which gives a plush landing and a distinct forward push. The Cloudsurfer Max uses two layers of CloudTec Phase and no Speedboard, so it is smoother and more continuous but less propulsive. The Cloudstratus is the more structured; the Max is the more rolling.

Does it fit true to size?

Take your usual running size. The mesh upper is light and has some give, and the next-generation eyestays spread lace pressure rather than concentrating it, so the fit is forgiving across the instep. If you need more room across the forefoot, On make this shoe in a Wide fitting too.

Can I use it for walking rather than running?

Yes, and a lot of people do. On list walking and treadmill alongside road running for this shoe. The deep cushioning and the rolling pod geometry suit walking pace well, and the rubber outsole handles pavement and a treadmill belt equally. If all-day standing is the main job rather than distance, this is one of the better choices in On's range.
