Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
Is this really a max-cushioned shoe?

It is deep and soft, but there is a wrinkle worth knowing. On market it as max-cushioned, while On's own rating scale puts the cushioning at High rather than Max. Both statements come from On. In practice it is a doubled layer of CloudTec Phase over soft Helion foam, so it lands soft and protects the legs over distance — just do not expect the very tallest stack on the market.

Is it a neutral shoe or a stability shoe?

On classify the support as Neutral, and there is no medial post in it. But they also rate its stability Medium-High, and specialist retailers list it as a neutral shoe with a planted feel. The steadiness comes from a broad platform rather than from anything correcting your stride. So: a neutral shoe that happens to feel secure. If you have been told you need genuine support, this is not that shoe.

Does it come in a wide?

Yes — pick Wide (2E) in the width selector above. On build it on a genuinely wider last rather than simply scaling the standard shoe up: a broader platform with a flat knit collar, so you take your usual length and get the extra room across the forefoot. If your foot is a standard width, stay with Regular (D), because the wide platform reads loose through the midfoot. The wide comes in White/White and Midnight/Ivory.

How much does it weigh?

Around 300 g, or a little over 10.5 oz, in a men's sample size. We are giving you a range rather than a single number on purpose: On do not publish a weight on the current product page, and the specialist retailers who do carry one disagree, listing anywhere from 10.3 to 11 oz. Either way this is a substantial shoe. That is the trade for the cushioning, and it is why it suits long steady miles rather than fast ones.

How many miles should I expect from them?

Plan on 300 to 500 miles, the usual range for a cushioned daily trainer. On a shoe like this the CloudTec structure loses its bounce-back before the rubber wears through, so judge by feel rather than by tread: when the softness goes flat, the part you paid for is finished. Replacing the insole first restores a surprising amount of the original feel and is worth trying before you replace the shoe.
