The original Alaskan Guide Shirt is the foundation of our flannel collection for good reason. It defines what a flannel shirt should be, providing comfort season after season. Our iconic flannel is brushed on both sides for softness and warmth. The tight weave blocks chilly winds while providing outstanding durability. It's ideal over a T-shirt in cool weather or with a base layer and vest as the temperature drops. The center-back box pleat provides ease of motion whether casting a fly, swinging an axe, or shouldering a shotgun. Dual flapped chest pockets are expandable for bulkier items and are protected by buttoning flaps. Buttoning front closure and adjustable cuffs.

To measure: Neck — around the base of the neck where a collar sits. Chest — around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms. Waist — where the waistband of your pants normally sits. Arm length — from the center at the base of the neck, over the shoulder and elbow, to just past the wrist bone.

Filson's Tin Cloth and waxed-canvas jackets are cut trim to wear over a shirt. If you are between sizes or plan to layer, order up one size.

Filson men's pants are sold by waist and length (for example 34 waist, Regular length). To check length, measure a pair of pants you already own along the inner seam from the crotch to the bottom of the hem: 30" and under is Short, 30–32" is Regular, 32" and over is Long.

If your measurements fall between sizes, choose the larger size for a looser fit or the smaller size for a snugger fit.

How does the Alaskan Guide Shirt fit?

Relaxed. It's cut with room for a tee or light baselayer underneath, and the center-back box pleat adds range of motion. Most people take their usual size; if you're between sizes and plan to layer heavily, size up.

Is this the same flannel Filson has always made?

Yes. The Alaskan Guide Shirt is the foundation of Filson's flannel line — 8-oz. cotton twill brushed on both sides, with the same box pleat and gusseted chest pockets it has carried for decades.

Will it shrink?

Machine-wash cold and tumble-dry low and shrinkage is minimal. Hot water and high heat will shrink cotton flannel, so both are worth avoiding.

Is it warm enough for winter?

On its own it handles cool fall and spring days. In real winter it works best as a midlayer under a waxed or insulated jacket.

Can I wear it over a baselayer?

That's what it's built for. The relaxed cut and box-pleat back leave room for a merino or synthetic baselayer without binding.
