Custom Shell™ HD
Description

Salomon took the fit skiers already trusted in the original Alpha and built the stiffer version of it. ExoDrive wraps a third cuff overlap around the ankle so the shell, cuff and liner load as one piece instead of fighting each other, and a Powerlink pivot sits lower than usual so what you ask for arrives at the ski sooner.

This is the firm end of the S/Pro Alpha range and Salomon say so themselves. The last is narrow, which is the whole point for a slim foot that wants no slop in it. A BOA dial on the cuff handles the fine tuning, two aluminium buckles do the rest, and every piece that matters unscrews so a bootfitter can get inside and make it yours.

Features
  • ExoDrive construction. A third cuff overlap wraps the ankle so the shell, cuff and liner flex as one piece, which is what holds your heel down when you load the front of the boot.
  • Powerlink™ pivot. A metal component ties the cuff to the shell at a lowered pivot point, shortening the path your input takes to reach the ski.
  • Custom Shell™ HD. A bootfitter can heat and reshape the lower shell, or the shell and cuff together, in about ten minutes.
  • S/Pro CF Expert liner. CF 4D construction with an external Talyn layer, an elastic toe box and an edgeless Custom Tongue 2 that comes out for customizing.
  • BOA® dial and two buckles. One cuff-mounted BOA dial micro-adjusts the wrap while two screwed aluminium buckles and a 45 mm Energyzer strap handle the rest.
Size & Fit
  • Ski boots are sized in Mondopoint, the length of your foot in centimeters, not a shoe size
  • Salomon classify this shell as narrow, 98 mm at the ball of the foot
  • Standing upright your toes should just brush the front; flexing forward should pull them back
  • Liners pack out with use, so a boot that feels roomy new will feel loose by midseason
  • We stock 27.5 and 28.5 in this model
  • If you are between sizes or have a wide forefoot, get measured rather than guessing

Materials
  • Boot shell: polyurethane with Custom Shell HD thin-wall construction.
  • Cuff: polyurethane with a metal Power Spine.
  • Liner: S/Pro CF Expert, cushioned foams with an external Talyn layer.
  • Footbed: Light 2, lightweight foam.
  • Strap: 45 mm screwed Energyzer Velcro.
  • Care: open the buckles and pull the liners out after every day so they dry in shape, away from any direct heat.

How it ranks across conditions.

Flex

Race

Flex index 120. Salomon call the stiffness Hard on their own scale, a step up from the 110 in the same shell.

Fit width

Narrow (98mm)
Medium (100mm)
Wide (102mm+)

Salomon classify this shell as narrow at 98 mm. If your forefoot is wide, this is the wrong boot before anything else about it matters.

Warmth

Light
Moderate
Warm

Salomon publish no warmth rating. A thin performance liner like the S/Pro CF Expert is warm enough for resort days and is not an insulated touring liner.

Walkability

Ski only
Some walking
GripWalk sole

No walk mode, but Salomon do publish the sole standard here: GripWalk, Adult, ISO 23223. Rockered rubber walks better than a flat alpine block.

Best for

Is this right for you?

All-mountain resort skiing

Steeps, chopped-up groomers and long fast runs, where a boot that flexes as one piece is what keeps the ski on edge.

Not for: Not a touring boot. There is no walk mode and no tech fitting, so uphill days are out. Need the skis too? Browse our skis

Narrow, low-volume feet

A slim foot with a low instep gets a boot that holds it without a fitter having to punch volume out of the shell.

Not for: A wide forefoot or a high instep will hurt in this boot and no amount of molding fixes a last that is the wrong shape. Wider foot? Browse all ski boots

Skiers who get boots fitted

Custom Shell HD, a moldable liner and screwed rather than riveted hardware make this an easy boot for a fitter to work on.

Not for: Not the cheapest way into skiing if you plan to buy off the shelf and never touch it again. Everything else for the hill

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
What does the flex number actually mean?

It is how hard the boot resists your shin pushing forward. Higher numbers resist more. The scale is not standardized between brands, so a 120 from one maker is not exactly a 120 from another. As a rough guide, 90 to 100 suits most intermediates, 110 to 120 suits strong skiers, and 130 and up is race territory.

How is this different from the 110?

Same shell, same 98 mm narrow last, same closure. The 120 is stiffer, which Salomon rate Hard against the 110's Medium, it runs a little lighter at 1870 g, and it steps up to the S/Pro CF Expert liner. The 120 also publishes a GripWalk sole standard where the 110 does not.

Do these need heat molding, and do you do it?

They do not need it to be skiable, but this boot is built for it: the shell takes Custom Shell HD and the liner is moldable. Ask our shop about bootfitting before you buy, since a fitted boot in the right size beats a more expensive boot in the wrong one.

Will these work with my bindings?

Salomon publish a GripWalk Adult sole on this boot, ISO 23223. That means it needs a GripWalk-compatible binding, and most modern alpine bindings take both GripWalk and ISO 5355. If yours is older or you are not sure what it accepts, ask us and we will check it against the boot.

How should a ski boot fit compared with a shoe?

Much tighter. Standing upright, your toes should just brush the front of the liner; flexing forward should pull them back off it. Ski boots are sized in Mondopoint, the length of your foot in centimeters, so your shoe size is only a starting point. Liners also pack out, so a boot that feels roomy new will feel loose by midseason.
