Features
  • Merino next to skin. The jersey fabric keeps 100% Merino wool against the hand, so the fiber doing the temperature regulating is the one you can feel.
  • Touchscreen thumb and index finger. Conductive thumb and index tips, so you can take a photo or answer a message without stripping a glove off in the cold.
  • Recycled nylon core. A nylon core carries the abrasion so the wool does not have to — the reason a glove this thin survives a season.
  • Layers under a mitt. Slim enough to wear inside a ski mitt on a genuinely cold day, and warm enough on its own when it is not.
  • Odor resistance. Merino resists odor build-up, which matters on a glove that lives balled up in a jacket pocket.
Size & Fit

Sized XS to XL on hand circumference — measure around the widest part of the palm and check the Smartwool glove chart on this page: XS 6–6.5 in, S 7–7.5 in, M 8–8.5 in, L 9–9.5 in, XL 10–10.5 in. The jersey knit stretches, so a glove that measures close will fit; sizing up costs dexterity and traps less warmth.

Smartwool Size Chart - Gloves

Smartwool Sizing Chart

Measurements are in inches, unless otherwise noted.

Gloves:

Size Hand Size
XS 6 - 6.5
S 7 - 7.5
M 8 - 8.5
L 9 - 9.5
XL 10 - 10.5

Kids' Gloves:

Size Hand Width Hand Length
S 5 - 5.5 5.5
M 5.5 - 6 6
L 6 - 6.5 6

Hand size is measured around the widest part of the hand at the knuckles, not including the thumb. Hand length is measured from the base of the palm to the tip of the middle finger.

Smartwool gloves run true to size. Apply your hand measurement to the chart above to choose the best size. Smartwool products are designed to retain their fit and shape; following the care instructions on the label will help avoid shrinking or stretching.

Warmth

Warm
Very warm

A single-layer Merino jersey. Warm for its thickness, but this is a shoulder-season and layering glove, not a deep-winter ski glove.

Dexterity

Low
Moderate
High
Very high

Thin enough to work a zip, a buckle or a phone screen without taking them off — the trade-off you make for the lower warmth rating.

Weather protection

None
Light
Moderate
High

An unlined knit glove. It is not windproof and it is not waterproof; wet snow will come through.

Odor resistance

Low

High
Excellent

Merino resists odor naturally, so a glove worn all week does not need washing all week.

Best for

Is this right for you?

Cold-weather running and hiking

Thin enough that your hands stay usable, warm enough for the first cold mile, and light enough to stuff in a pocket once you have warmed up.

Not for: Below freezing with wind, a single-layer knit glove is not enough on its own. Add the Thermal Merino Reversible Neck Gaiter

Liner under a ski mitt

Thin enough to fit inside a waterproof mitt, and warm enough to keep hands working during the minute the mitt is off at the top.

Not for: It is not a ski glove. There is no waterproof shell and no insulation — it goes under one, not instead of one. Add the Unisex Thermal Merino Balaclava

Everyday cold

The glove that lives in a coat pocket all winter, with touchscreen tips so it stays on while you use a phone.

Not for: Wet weather is its weak point — an unlined wool knit soaks and stays damp. Try the Thermal Merino Reversible Neck Gaiter

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
How do I pick a size?

Measure around the widest part of your palm and check the Smartwool glove chart on this page: XS 6–6.5 in, S 7–7.5 in, M 8–8.5 in, L 9–9.5 in, XL 10–10.5 in.

Do the touchscreen tips actually work?

The thumb and index finger are built for it. Like every conductive knit they work better on a dry screen than a wet one, and a very thick screen protector can defeat them.

Are these warm enough for skiing?

On their own, no. This is a thin single-layer Merino jersey glove — it works as a liner inside a ski mitt or glove, and on its own for everyday cold rather than a full day on the hill.

Are they waterproof?

No. It is an unlined knit glove, so wet snow will come through and the wool will hold water. Merino still insulates when damp, which is the reason to choose wool here, but it is not a wet-weather glove.

Will they shrink in the wash?

Not if you follow the label — machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and dry flat. A hot dryer will felt and shrink a thin Merino glove faster than anything else in the drawer.
