Description

Keen's pitch for the Targhee IV is that it is the last hiking boot you'll buy, and the construction is where that claim lives. KEEN.FUSION bonds the upper to the sole without glue, which removes the single most common way a hiking boot dies - the outsole peeling away from the upper after a few hundred miles. Underneath, a Luftcell air-injected polyurethane midsole with LuftCore resists compression rather than flattening out the way EVA does, and the KEEN.RUGGED outsole is a TPU compound Keen rate as twice as abrasion-resistant as rubber.

The rest is a proper mid-cut hiker: a nubuck leather upper over a KEEN.DRY waterproof breathable membrane and mesh lining, a stability shank, a heel-capture system, a rubber toe bumper and multi-directional lugs. It weighs 16.58 oz per boot with a 24 mm heel stack and a 12 mm drop, and it keeps Keen's roomy forefoot, which is the reason a lot of people buy Keen in the first place. The laces are recycled PET and the boot has been PFAS-free since 2018.

Features
  • KEEN.FUSION construction. The upper is bonded to the sole without glue. Delamination - the outsole peeling off the upper - is how most hiking boots die, and this removes the failure point rather than reinforcing it.
  • KEEN.RUGGED outsole. A TPU compound Keen rate as twice as abrasion-resistant as rubber, cut with non-marking multi-directional lugs for grip on mixed ground.
  • Luftcell midsole with LuftCore. Air-injected polyurethane rather than EVA. It feels springy underfoot and, more importantly, resists the slow compression that turns a comfortable boot into a flat one.
  • KEEN.DRY membrane. A waterproof, breathable membrane behind the nubuck upper and mesh lining - it keeps water out while letting the boot vent.
  • PFAS-free and recycled laces. Keen have been PFAS-free since 2018, and the laces are made from recycled PET.

How to measure: stand on a piece of paper and mark the back of your heel and the tip of your longest toe, then measure the distance in centimeters. If one foot is longer than the other, use the larger measurement and match it to the closest Heel-to-toe value in the chart.

Fit notes: every KEEN starts with a secure heel fit for stability, with room in the toe box for toes to splay. KEEN footwear is built on an anatomical last with fine-tuned arch support and cushioning, and protected by KEEN's iconic rubber toe bumper.

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
What does "glue-free construction" actually mean for me?

It means the most common way a hiking boot fails has been designed out. On a conventional boot the outsole is cemented to the upper, and after enough miles and enough wet-dry cycles that bond starts to let go at the toe or the heel - that is delamination, and it usually ends the boot. KEEN.FUSION bonds the two together without cement. Keen publish a delamination guarantee on this construction; the terms are on Keen's own site and worth reading before you rely on them.

Are they waterproof, and will they stay waterproof?

Yes, via a KEEN.DRY waterproof breathable membrane behind the nubuck upper and mesh lining. That handles rain, wet grass, puddles and boggy ground. Two honest caveats: water deeper than the boot collar will come in over the top regardless of the membrane, and waterproofing on any leather boot lasts longer if you keep the leather clean - caked mud and grit abrade the upper and shorten the membrane's working life.

Do they run true to size, and how wide is the fit?

True to size for most people. Keen build a notably roomy forefoot - generous space for the toes to splay - so if you have found other hiking boots pinch across the ball of the foot, this is usually the fix, and you should not need to size up to get it. We stock B (regular) and D (wide), US 7 through 10. If you have narrow feet, be aware the forefoot may feel more spacious than you are used to; the heel-capture system stops that becoming a sloppy fit.

How do I clean and look after them?

Clean with mild soap and cold water. Knock off dried mud first with a stiff brush, then work the leather with a soft cloth and let the boots air dry away from direct heat - never on a radiator, in front of a fire or in a hot car, all of which crack nubuck and stiffen the midsole. Pull the footbed out to dry separately. Treat the nubuck with a suitable conditioner occasionally to stop it drying out.

What is the warranty?

Keen's US warranty covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the original date of purchase, with proof of purchase from an authorised retailer. It does not cover normal wear and tear, improper care, cosmetic damage or fit, and laces, lace hardware and insoles are excluded. Keen publish a separate delamination guarantee on this construction - the terms for both are on Keen's site. If something goes wrong with a pair bought from us, talk to us first and we will help you sort it out.
