Description

Cold-weather adventures call for warmth that keeps up. The Kids' Thermal Merino Reversible Cuffed Beanie wraps little heads in soft, temperature-regulating Merino wool with a double-layer build and a reversible design that gives them two looks in one. From the bus stop to the bottom of the hill, it's the cozy layer they'll reach for all season.

Bulk-free seams.
Reversible
Two looks, one hat.
100% Merino
No blend.
Features
  • 100% Merino wool. No blend — the whole hat is wool, which is what gives it the odor resistance and the way it keeps insulating when damp.
  • Double-layer interlock knit. Two layers of interlock trap more warm air than a single-layer beanie, without the thickness of a chunky knit.
  • Reversible. Two patterns in one hat. Flip it for a different look, or to turn the damp side away from the forehead.
  • Bulk-free seams. Seams are finished flat so the hat sits under a helmet without a ridge pressing into the head — the usual reason a kid takes a beanie off.
  • Merino moisture management. Wool moves moisture as vapor, so the band does not turn clammy on the climb back up to the lift.
Size & Fit

Two sizes, S/M and L/XL, on head circumference — measure around the head just above the ears and check the Smartwool kids' chart on this page. The cuff folds up, so it can be worn shallow or pulled down over the ears. Bulk-free seams are what let it sit under a helmet without a pressure point.

How to measure - Chest: measure under the arms, around the fullest part of the chest and back. Waist: measure around the natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose. Height: measure standing straight, without shoes, from the top of the head to the floor.

Smartwool clothing runs true to size. If your child is between sizes, age, height and weight are good guides for choosing the best fit. Smartwool products are designed to retain their fit and shape; following the care instructions on the label will help avoid shrinking or stretching.

Best for

Is this right for you?

Ski and snowboard days

Designed to go under a helmet — the bulk-free seams and interlock knit are what make that work rather than an afterthought.

Not for: Not a standalone hat in a real wind; a wool knit is not windproof. Pair it with the Classic Thermal Crew

Everyday winter

100% Merino, so it survives being worn all week between washes, and the cuff lets it be worn two ways.

Not for: Above about 50°F this is more hat than most kids want. Add the Kids' Thermal Merino Neck Gaiter

Cold mornings and winter play

Wool keeps working when it gets damp, which is what happens to a hat in wet snow.

Not for: For a more hard-wearing blend with recycled content, the Reversible Art Beanie is the tougher hat. Try the Kids' Reversible Art Beanie

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
How do I pick between S/M and L/XL?

Measure around your child's head just above the ears and check the Smartwool kids' chart on this page. If they fall between the two, the smaller size usually sits better than the larger one slipping down.

Does it fit under a ski helmet?

That is what it is designed for. The interlock knit and the bulk-free seams keep it flat, so there is no seam ridge pressing into the head under a helmet.

Which side is the 'right' side?

Both. It is reversible, with a finished face and a different pattern on each side.

Is 100% wool itchy on the forehead?

Merino is a much finer fiber than the wool most people remember, and the band sits smooth. Most kids wear it without complaint, but the forehead is the place a wool-sensitive child will notice it, so try it on first.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colors and dry flat or tumble dry low. Do not use a hot dryer — heat felts and shrinks a wool knit.
