Description

Help keep your little shredder warm all day long with the Kids' Thermal Merino Neck Gaiter. Updated with a longer design and sized for small heads and necks, it offers lots of heat and helps fend off the snow.

Perfect for
Ski and ride
Under a collar.
Everyday warmth
Pocket-sized.
100% Merino
No blend.
Features
  • 100% Merino wool. No blend — the whole gaiter is wool, which is why it keeps insulating once breathing has dampened the front.
  • Merino moisture management. Wool moves moisture as vapor, so the fabric over the mouth does not turn into a cold wet patch by mid-morning.
  • Longer cut, sized for kids. Cut longer than the previous version and shaped for small heads and necks, so it covers the gap at the jacket collar rather than riding up out of it.
  • Single-layer jersey knit. One layer keeps it thin enough to sit under a jacket collar and a helmet strap without bunching.
  • Odor resistance. Merino resists odor build-up, which matters on something worn over the mouth every day for a season.
Size & Fit

Two sizes on head circumference: S/M measures 26 cm long by 18 cm wide, L/XL measures 30 cm by 20 cm. Both are cut longer than the previous version and sized for small heads and necks, so it pulls up over the nose without stretching thin. Check the Smartwool kids' chart on this page.

How to measure - Chest: measure under the arms, around the fullest part of the chest and back. Waist: measure around the natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose. Height: measure standing straight, without shoes, from the top of the head to the floor.

Smartwool clothing runs true to size. If your child is between sizes, age, height and weight are good guides for choosing the best fit. Smartwool products are designed to retain their fit and shape; following the care instructions on the label will help avoid shrinking or stretching.

Best for

Is this right for you?

Ski and snowboard days

Thin enough to sit under a helmet strap and inside a jacket collar, and long enough to pull over the nose on the chairlift.

Not for: On a genuinely cold and windy day a single layer over the face is not enough. Step up to the Kids' Thermal Merino Balaclava

Cold walks and the school run

Pull it up walking into the wind, push it down once you are inside. The one accessory most kids will actually keep on.

Not for: It covers the neck and face, not the head — pair it with a beanie for a whole-head solution. Add the Thermal Merino Reversible Cuffed Beanie

Sledding and winter play

Wool keeps working when it gets damp, and it is small enough to live in a coat pocket all winter.

Not for: A single layer offers no wind protection on its own — it is warmth, not a windproof shell. Add the Kids' Merino Gloves

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
How do I pick between S/M and L/XL?

They are sized on head circumference — check the Smartwool kids' chart on this page. S/M measures 26 cm long by 18 cm wide, L/XL measures 30 cm by 20 cm.

Can it be pulled up over the nose?

Yes. It is cut longer than the previous version specifically so it reaches over the nose without pulling out of the jacket collar at the bottom.

How is this different from the balaclava?

This covers the neck and can be pulled over the face. The Thermal Merino Balaclava covers the head as well, in one piece, and is double-layered — warmer, but more coverage than most days need.

Will it get wet and cold from breathing?

Less than a synthetic one. Merino moves moisture as vapor and keeps insulating when damp. It will still get damp on a hard day — that is physics, not a fault.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colors, then tumble dry low or lay flat. A hot dryer will felt and shrink it.
