Description

Made for imaginative days outside, the Kids' Reversible Art Beanie blends the comfort of Merino wool with the durability of recycled fibers so it can handle everything a snow day throws at it. Its double-layer jersey knit keeps warmth in, and the reversible design means twice the style. Playful, practical, and built to last.

Features
  • Reversible. Two colorways in one hat. Flip it for a different look, or to turn the side that has been against a sweaty forehead away from it.
  • Double-layer jersey knit. Two layers of knit trap more warm air than one, which is where the warmth in a thin beanie actually comes from.
  • 44% recycled polyester. Shell and lining are both a Merino blend built on recycled polyester, which adds durability a pure wool knit would not have.
  • Merino blend. Merino brings the softness and the odor resistance; the nylon and polyester bring the abrasion resistance a kids' hat needs.
  • Soft against the forehead. A jersey knit with no seam across the brow — the part of a beanie a child will complain about first.
Size & Fit

Two sizes, S/M and L/XL, on head circumference — measure around the head just above the ears and check the Smartwool kids' chart on this page. The knit has stretch, so a beanie that measures close will sit snug rather than tight. Double-layer construction means it is a little thicker under a helmet than a single-layer hat.

How to measure - Chest: measure under the arms, around the fullest part of the chest and back. Waist: measure around the natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose. Height: measure standing straight, without shoes, from the top of the head to the floor.

Smartwool clothing runs true to size. If your child is between sizes, age, height and weight are good guides for choosing the best fit. Smartwool products are designed to retain their fit and shape; following the care instructions on the label will help avoid shrinking or stretching.

Warmth

Very warm

Double-layer construction is what lifts this above a single-layer beanie. Warm for winter play; not an expedition hat.

Bulk under a helmet

High

Two layers of jersey knit add real thickness. It fits under most helmets, but check the fit before a ski day rather than at the lift.

Odor resistance

Excellent

The Merino content resists odor well, though a blend does not match the performance of a 100% wool hat.

Slouch

Sits close to the head with a little stretch — snug enough to stay put on a sled run.

Best for

Is this right for you?

Snow days and sledding

Double-layer warmth with a blend built to survive being dropped in the snow, stuffed in a pocket and worn again the next day.

Not for: Two layers make it thicker than a helmet liner — try it under the helmet before you rely on it. Add the Kids' Merino Gloves

Everyday winter

Warm enough for the walk to school, and the reversible design means two looks out of one hat.

Not for: Above about 50°F it is more hat than most kids will keep on. Add the Kids' Thermal Merino Neck Gaiter

Cold-weather walks and playgrounds

The recycled polyester content makes this the more hard-wearing of our kids' beanies, which matters on a hat that gets treated badly.

Not for: For a thinner hat that sits flatter under a helmet, the Thermal Merino Reversible Cuffed Beanie is the closer fit. Try the Thermal Merino Reversible Cuffed Beanie

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
How do I pick between S/M and L/XL?

Measure around your child's head just above the ears and check the Smartwool kids' chart on this page. If they fall between the two, the knit has enough stretch that the smaller size usually sits better than the larger one slipping down.

Does it fit under a ski helmet?

It fits under most, but the double-layer knit is thicker than a single-layer liner. Try the combination at home before a ski day rather than discovering it at the lift.

Which side is the 'right' side?

Both. It is built to be worn either way out, with a finished face on each side and two different colorways.

Is it itchy?

It is a Merino blend rather than 100% wool, and Merino is a much finer fiber than the wool most people remember. Most kids wear it without comment, but the band sits directly on the forehead, so try it on if your child is wool-sensitive.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colors, then dry flat. Do not tumble dry — heat is what shrinks and felts a wool-blend knit.
