Description

On's marathon shoe. A double layer of Helion HF hyper foam sits under a glass-fibre-infused Speedboard, so the stack is deep enough to carry you through the late miles and still returns something at every push-off.

Above it the build is deliberately spare - a light, breathable mesh upper that moulds to the foot, with padding kept where a long race needs it, around the heel. It is built for the distance rather than for the first mile.

Features
  • Double Helion HF hyper foam. Two layers of On's hyper foam rather than one. It is what makes the stack both deep and lively - the shoe absorbs a marathon's worth of impact while still handing energy back at push-off.
  • Glass fibre-infused Speedboard. The plate. It bends at the forefoot to store energy and releases it at the moment you push off, which is how a race shoe improves running economy rather than just cushioning you.
  • CloudTec tuned for fast runs. On's pod cushioning, geometry-tuned for speed here rather than for comfort. It still compresses in more than one direction, which is what keeps a tall stack from feeling unstable.
  • Lightweight moulding mesh upper. Light and breathable, and built to move with the foot rather than hold it rigid. On describe it as adjusting to the foot's movements - useful when a foot swells over 26 miles.
  • Padded heel for the distance. The one place On kept weight. A padded heel design is there specifically for comfort over long distances, where a stripped-out race upper usually starts to hurt.
Size & Fit
Narrow

Roomy

Standard medium width. Fits most feet true to size.

  • Take your usual running size.
  • Stocked in one fitting: Regular.
  • The mesh upper moulds and adjusts as the foot swells over a long race.
  • Do not size up for marathon foot swell - heel slip over 26 miles causes more trouble.
  • Neutral support only, with no corrective posting.

Max

A double layer of hyper foam under a tall stack. This is the most cushioned shoe in On's race line, built so the last six miles feel like the first six.

Responsiveness

Cushioned
Balanced
Propulsive

A glass fibre-infused Speedboard over hyper foam is a propulsion package, not a comfort one. It stores energy through the forefoot and returns it at push-off.

Stability

Structured

Neutral, as race shoes at this stack height are. The CloudTec geometry helps, but a tall plated shoe always asks more of the runner than a daily trainer does.

Weight

Light

Substantial

250 g in a women's sample size. Not the lightest thing On make - the Max trades a little weight for the foam stack that gets you to the finish.

Best for

Is this right for you?

Marathon and half marathon

What it exists for. On call the half a test of speed and stamina - finding a pace and holding it - and this is the shoe built to hold that pace when your legs would rather not.

Not for: Not an everyday trainer. Race foams wear out quickly under daily mileage, and you will spend the shoe's best miles on easy runs. Shop road running shoes

Race-pace workouts

Worth wearing for the sessions where you rehearse race pace, so the shoe is familiar on the day rather than a surprise.

Not for: Not for easy days or recovery runs. The plate wants a committed footstrike and gives little back at a jog. Shop women's shoes

Trails and rough ground

Smooth, dry tarmac only.

Not for: Avoid entirely. A tall stack, a stiff plate and a road outsole is the wrong combination off pavement, and it is an ankle risk rather than just a slow choice. Shop all footwear

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
How is the Cloudboom Max different from the Cloudboom Echo?

Both are On race shoes with a Speedboard, but they answer different questions. The Max is the marathon shoe - a double layer of Helion HF hyper foam gives it the deepest stack in the line, so it keeps protecting you when your form starts to go late in a long race. The Echo is lighter and sharper, better suited to shorter, faster racing where you are not on your feet long enough to need that much foam. If your goal race is a half or a full, the Max is the one.

How many miles will a pair last?

Fewer than a daily trainer, and that is true of every super shoe rather than a fault of this one. Hyper foams are tuned for maximum energy return, which means they compress and recover hard and lose their spring sooner than a conventional midsole. Most runners get a few marathons plus a handful of race-pace sessions from a pair. Save them for the days that matter and judge them by feel - when the foam stops springing back, the shoe is done regardless of how the outsole looks.

Does the Cloudboom Max run true to size?

Take your usual running size. The mesh upper is built to mould and adjust to the foot's movement rather than to hold a fixed shape, so it accommodates the swelling that happens over a long race without needing extra length. Resist the urge to size up for marathon foot swell - a race shoe that slips at the heel over 26 miles causes more trouble than a snug one.

Can I train in it every day?

You can, but you should not. The foam that makes this shoe fast is the same foam that wears out quickly, so daily mileage spends the pair's best miles on runs that do not need them. There is also a case for variety - training in one very tall, plated shoe every day loads the legs in a single, consistent way. Use a daily trainer for volume and keep this for races and race-pace work.

Is it stable enough if I am new to plated shoes?

Approach it with some care. A tall stack over a stiff plate feels different from a daily trainer - less connected to the road and more willing to roll if you land badly or run tired. It is a neutral shoe with no corrective support. Run a few shorter efforts in them before racing so your feet and ankles adapt, rather than taking them out of the box on race morning. Almost everyone adjusts, but nobody should find out at mile one of a marathon.
