Features
  • Merino wool blend. 70% Merino carries the warmth, the moisture management and the odor resistance; the nylon and elastane carry the durability and the shape. Full blend: 70% Merino wool, 28% recycled nylon, 2% elastane.
  • Light cushion. Light cushion on the shin, calf and foot — enough padding to stop a boot rubbing, thin enough that a growing foot still has room.
  • Flat knit toe seam. A flat knit toe seam rather than a stitched ridge, so there is no bump across the toes inside a boot.
  • Over-the-calf height. The cuff finishes above the boot cuff rather than under it, so there is no sock edge trapped between a hard shell and the shin.
  • Odor resistance. Merino resists odor build-up, so a pair aired out overnight is wearable again the next day — the practical reason to ski in wool.
Size & Fit

Smartwool sock sizes run off shoe size — check the Smartwool sock chart on this page. Offered in XS, S, M, L. Over-the-calf height finishes above a ski or snowboard boot cuff rather than under it. Kids' sock sizes follow kids' shoe sizing, which restarts after 13.5 — so M covers 12 through 2.5 and L covers 3 through 6.

Best for

Is this right for you?

Ski and snowboard lessons

Over-the-calf height means no sock edge trapped between a hard boot cuff and the shin — the thing that ends a lesson early.

Not for: Not an everyday sock: over-the-calf Merino is more sock than a school shoe needs. Add the Kids' Thermal Merino Neck Gaiter

Sledding and snow play

Merino keeps insulating when it gets damp, which is what happens to every sock inside a snow boot by lunchtime.

Not for: A wet sock is still a wet sock — bring a spare pair for a full day out. Add the Kids' Merino Gloves

Winter boots

Warm enough for walking-around winter boots, and odor-resistant enough to go more than one day.

Not for: Above about 50°F this is more sock than most kids want. Pair with the Kids' Classic Thermal Base Layer Bottom

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
How do I pick a sock size?

Smartwool sock sizes run off shoe size, not foot length in inches. The Smartwool sock chart on this page maps each size to US, Euro and UK shoe sizes. This style is offered in XS, S, M, L.

What does light cushion mean?

Smartwool's own definition for this style: “Light cushioning is designed with less bulk, while still giving protection from blisters and discomfort.” Light cushion on the shin, calf and foot — enough padding to stop a boot rubbing, thin enough that a growing foot still has room.

Can I wear these more than once between washes?

Yes — that is one of the practical reasons to ski in wool. Merino resists odor build-up, so a pair aired out overnight is fine for a second and often a third day. Wash them when they are actually dirty.

Will they shrink?

Not if you follow the label. Machine wash on a gentle cycle in warm or cool water and tumble dry low. High heat is what shrinks and felts a wool sock — a hot dryer will do more damage than a season of skiing.

Do I need a liner sock under these?

No. One Merino sock is the right answer in a modern boot; two socks bunch, trap moisture between the layers and cause more blisters than they prevent.
