Description

The Lone Peak is the shoe that made Altra's name, and the 9 is a careful rework rather than a reinvention. The upper is recycled ripstop mesh with no-sew overlays, built to survive the sort of mileage that kills trail shoes; the midsole foam was revised to be lighter and to sit you closer to the ground; and the MaxTrac outsole was redrawn for grip on loose and rocky going.

What makes it an Altra is the shape. The platform is level from heel to toe rather than ramped, so you land the way you would barefoot, and the Original FootShape toe box is genuinely foot-shaped - wide where your toes are, with room to spread on a long descent. People who get on with it tend not to go back.

Perfect for
Trail running
Loose and rocky.
Hiking
Day hikes and packs.
Zero drop
Level, foot-shaped.
Features
  • Zero drop platform. Heel and forefoot sit at the same height, so you land level rather than tipped forward. It is the thing Altra is known for and it takes getting used to.
  • Original FootShape toe box. Altra's roomiest last, shaped like a foot rather than a shoe - your toes can spread on a descent instead of being squeezed together.
  • Altra EGO midsole. Revised for the 9 to be lighter and to keep you closer to the ground, so you can still feel what you are running on.
  • MaxTrac outsole. Redrawn tread with sticky rubber and a trail-specific lug pattern for grip on loose dirt, gravel and wet rock.
  • Recycled ripstop upper. A 100 percent recycled ripstop mesh with no-sew overlays, chosen for high-mileage durability rather than for looks.
Size & Fit
Narrow
Regular
Roomy

Generous through the forefoot and toe box. Good for wider feet, or for long days when feet swell.

  • Men's US 7-13 in half sizes, plus 14 and 15.
  • Take your usual running-shoe size for length. The Original FootShape toe box is much wider than a normal shoe - that is deliberate, so do not size down for it.
  • If you are new to zero drop, build up gradually. Short easy runs first; your calves and Achilles need a few weeks to adapt.
  • Wide feet generally do well here without needing a wide fitting.
  • Neutral only. There is no support structure.

Materials
  • Upper: 100 percent recycled ripstop mesh with no-sew overlays.
  • Midsole: Altra EGO foam.
  • Outsole: MaxTrac rubber.
  • Care: let mud dry and brush it out of the lugs rather than soaking the shoe, then hand wash the upper with mild soap and cool water and air dry at room temperature away from direct heat. No washing machine and no tumble dryer - heat permanently flattens the midsole foam.

Best for

Is this right for you?

Trail running

The job it was built for. Grip, a foot-shaped toe box for long descents and a level platform that lets your foot work the way it wants to.

Not for: Not a road shoe. Zero drop on pavement loads the calves hard, and the lugs wear down fast on tarmac. Running on roads instead: browse men's road running

Hiking and backpacking

Altra list day hiking and backpacking alongside running, and the toe box is why - with a pack on and a long descent ahead, room for your toes stops being a luxury.

Not for: There is no ankle support and no waterproof membrane. If you want either, this is the wrong shoe. Want a boot or a waterproof version: see trail and hiking shoes

Everyday wear

It carries the American Podiatric Medical Association's Seal of Acceptance, and plenty of people wear Lone Peaks simply because their feet prefer the shape.

Not for: If you have never worn zero drop, do not make your first pair the one you stand in all day. Build up to it. See everything in footwear

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
What does zero drop actually mean?

The heel and the forefoot sit at the same height off the ground, so your foot is level rather than tilted forward. Most shoes lift the heel by 4 to 12 mm. Level feels more natural once you adapt, but it asks more of your calves and Achilles at first.

Do I need to transition slowly?

Yes, if you are coming from a raised-heel shoe. Start with short, easy runs and build up over a few weeks rather than going straight to a long one. Rushing it is the most common reason people bounce off Altra.

Do these run true to size?

Yes in length - take your usual running-shoe size. The width is a different matter: the Original FootShape toe box is much roomier than a normal shoe, which is the point. Do not size down to compensate.

Are they waterproof?

No. This is the standard mesh upper, which breathes and drains rather than keeping water out. Altra make waterproof versions of the Lone Peak if that is what you need.

Can I hike in them as well as run?

Yes, and plenty of people buy them for exactly that. Altra list day hiking and backpacking among the intended uses. What you do not get is ankle support or a stiff shank, so very heavy loads may want a boot.
