Features
  • Double-layer construction. Two layers of Merino knit trap more warm air than a single-layer gaiter, without adding bulk under a helmet or jacket collar.
  • Merino moisture management. Merino moves moisture vapor away from the skin, so the fabric over your mouth and nose does not turn clammy on the climb.
  • Reversible. Flip it for a second look, and to turn the side that has been against your face away from it.
  • Bulk-free finished seams. Cleanly finished seams lie flat, so the gaiter layers under a collar or helmet strap without pressure points.
  • Interlock knit. An interlock structure gives the wool a smooth, stable face that stays comfortable directly against the skin.
Size & Fit

One size, built for head circumferences of 21.5 to 23.5 inches (55 to 60 cm). The interlock knit stretches to pull on over a head, then sits close at the neck without gapping. Cleanly finished seams keep it flat under a helmet strap or jacket collar.

Materials
  • 100% Merino wool.
  • Care: Machine wash cold on gentle cycle with like colors; do not bleach; tumble dry low or lay flat to dry; do not iron; do not dry clean.

Warmth

Warm
Very warm

Double-layered Merino puts two thicknesses of wool over the neck, which is warmer than a single-layer gaiter without becoming bulky.

Breathability

Very high

Merino breathes well for its warmth, so moisture from your breath moves out rather than icing up against your face.

Odor resistance

Low

Excellent

Merino naturally resists odor build-up, which matters on a layer worn over the mouth and nose day after day.

Full balaclava

At 10.25 inches it sits low on the neck and pulls up over the nose, but it is not a hooded balaclava.

Best for

Is this right for you?

Ski and snowboard days

Sits under a helmet and inside a jacket collar, pulls up over the nose on the lift and drops to the neck on the way down.

Not for: It covers the neck and face, not the head. For full head coverage in deep cold you want a balaclava. Layer it with a Classic Thermal base layer

Winter running and hiking

Breathes well enough to keep on while you work, and the double layer takes the edge off wind on exposed ridges.

Not for: On mild days the double layer is more warmth than you need. Reach for a single-layer gaiter instead. Try the Merino All-season Neck Gaiter

Everyday cold-weather wear

Warm enough for the walk to work or the school run, and reversible so it reads differently with two different coats.

Not for: Not a scarf substitute if you want something you can drape or knot — this is a closed tube. Try the Merino All-season Neck Gaiter

Questions, answered

Before you buy.

Pulled from chats, emails and store visits. The things people actually ask us before they buy. Don't see yours?

Ask a question
Will it get damp and cold from my breath?

Less than a synthetic gaiter will. Merino moves moisture as vapor and keeps insulating even when damp, so breathing through it in the cold stays comfortable for longer. In sustained sub-freezing wind it will still pick up moisture eventually — rotating which side sits over your mouth helps, and the reversible construction makes that easy.

Does one size actually fit most people?

It is built for head circumferences of 21.5 to 23.5 inches (55 to 60 cm), which covers most adults. The knit has natural stretch, so it pulls over a head comfortably and then sits without gapping at the neck.

Can I wear it under a ski helmet?

Yes. The seams are finished flat and the tube is not bulky, so it sits under a helmet strap and inside a jacket collar without pressure points. It is a neck gaiter rather than a balaclava, so it does not cover the top of the head.

How often does it need washing?

Far less often than a synthetic. Merino resists odor build-up, so most people get several outings from it before it needs a wash. Airing it out between wears does most of the work.

Is it itchy?

Merino fibers are far finer than the coarse wool most people associate with itch, and the interlock knit presents a smooth face to the skin. It is designed to be worn directly against the neck and face.
