Whitewater Kayaks

Kayaks built for moving water — short, maneuverable hulls designed to read current, hold a line through a drop, and recover from a rough swing. Browse river runners for predictable Class II–IV runs, creek boats with the volume to punch through holes and resurface clean, and playboats sized for surf, spin, and freestyle on a single feature. Setup matters as much as hull choice — outfitting, spray skirts, and helmets are not optional. Tell us what water you run and how often, and our outdoor specialists will help you match a hull, outfit it, and round out the kit.

About Mountain Sports Whitewater Kayaks

Whitewater kayaks are purpose-built for what a recreational or touring hull literally can't do: read and respond to moving water at speed. The hull is short, the volume is concentrated for resurfacing after drops, and the cockpit is sealed by a spray skirt so the boat stays dry when waves break over it. Within whitewater there are three rough categories — river runners for stable, predictable Class II–IV miles; creek boats with the rocker and volume for steeper Class IV–V terrain and bigger drops; and playboats with a slicey, planing hull built to surf, cartwheel, and squirt on a single feature. The right choice depends on the water you actually run and how often you run it, not the water you dream about — most paddlers are better served by a versatile river runner than a specialty creek boat or playboat.

A whitewater hull is a system, not a standalone purchase. You'll need a spray skirt, helmet, and the rest of the safety setup from our paddles and paddling accessories, plus on-water apparel sized for cold water and wet sessions and water shoes with the grip to hold a slick launch. Headed for flatter water? Browse recreational kayaks or fishing kayaks instead. Paddlers visiting or driving in from across the Dallas-Fort Worth region can see whitewater hulls and outfit them on the floor at our Dallas-Forth Worth store, 2025 W. Pioneer Pkwy., Arlington, TX 76013 — call (817) 461-4503 to check what's in stock before you make the trip. Mountain Sports started as a small canoe rental shop more than 50 years ago and has been outfitting paddlers across every discipline ever since — message us at (817) 823-0010 or hospitality@mountainsports.com if you want help picking between river runner, creek, and play, sizing a hull and outfit to your body, or talking through whether your skill level matches what the boat is built for. We'll tell you honestly if you're not ready for a creek boat yet.
