About Mountain Sports Fishing Kayaks
A fishing kayak isn't a regular kayak with a rod holder bolted on. The hull is wider and flatter for stability when you stand and cast, the deck is laid out around accessory management (rod holders, gear tracks, mounting plates, livewells, tackle storage), and most modern hulls accept either a pedal drive or a transom-mount motor so your hands stay free for the rod. Tradeoffs come with all that: fishing kayaks are heavier than recreational hulls, slower to paddle, and harder to car-top alone — but they hold a line in wind, take electronics cleanly, and let you cover water and fish at the same time.
Pair a hull with a kayak motor or trolling setup, the right paddles and paddling accessories, on-water apparel, and water shoes for slick boat ramps. New to kayak fishing or trying to decide between pedal, paddle, and motor? Browse our full kayak selection or our recreational kayaks for comparison. Anglers in Dallas-Fort Worth can come see fishing kayaks in person at our Dallas-Forth Worth store, 2025 W. Pioneer Pkwy., Arlington, TX 76013 — sit in the hulls, check the gear track layouts, and walk out the same day. Call (817) 461-4503 for in-store availability. Mountain Sports started as a small canoe rental shop and has been outfitting paddlers and anglers for over 50 years — message us at (817) 823-0010 or hospitality@mountainsports.com to talk through hull width, weight capacity, and transport logistics before you commit. Real questions get real answers, including "a sit-on-top recreational hull might be enough for the way you fish."
